Budd Schulberg’s Academy Award–winning screenplay, updated as a stage drama for modern audiences

First performed in 1988 and again on Broadway in 1995, Budd Schulberg and Stan Silverman’s stage version of On the Waterfront may represent the purest incarnation of his classic story. Produced forty years after the movie swept the Academy Awards, the subtly modernized stage play was a call to arms for a new generation. With this rendition, Schulberg and Silverman hoped to reach young people who seemed detached from the dehumanizing effects of poverty and the exploitation of society’s most vulnerable. Set in the 1950s and featuring original protagonists Terry Malloy and Father Pete Barry, On the Waterfront continues to stand as a masterful and uniquely American tragedy.

This ebook features an illustrated biography of Budd Schulberg including rare images and never-before-seen documents from the author’s estate.

there's a whole generation of youngsters out there that never heard of the movie much less the play that Schulberg and his partner adapted for the stage. Could use some trimming, but still packs the wallop it did back in the fifties.

On the Waterfront The Play edition by Budd Schulberg Stan Silverman Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews

I am old enough to have seen the film at the theatera, and a number of times at home. Due to sight problems, I have heard a number of plays on my MP3. Anyone who thinks the film is great, should listen or see the play. Whenever truth conquers over the mediorce, it is to be treasured. Considering the constraints during the 50's, and the need to make a commercial sucess, the film lacks the grit and reality that many have written about the film. And some of the critics feel this film is propaganda and part of the "Witchhunts" of the 50's which continue on college cammpuses and in the atitude of current Hollywood. But perhaps they are protesting too much. I don't understand why the many people, in all walks of life during WWII, defended the Reds and Stalin. They were our Allies during most of the war. Of course, most people are unaware that Stalin started the War, stabing Poland from the East, and ended up with Poland for over 50 years. I could go on, but nobody but the most uniformed could disagree with those facts.

Despite Kazan and Schulber have been thown on the trash heep by defenders of Hollywood during this period, I have a professional view of that era. I also knew that Boddy Kennedy worked on the Senate committe investigating the Reds in Hollywood, and that his Father, Joe, was an Irish drinking buddy who spent time as a guest in Hyannis Port. That fact is hardly in the public domain, or recognized by the teachers in our universities and curently making films.

Terry Malloy, the role played by Brando, dies. Kazan couldn't end his film with the plays ending. He also could not show, or discuss the higher ups in politics, the Catholic Church, the main stream media of the time, and worst of all the enforcement agencies that should have been fighting the corruption. That purity was left to the Federal government. The real relevance to this play, and film, to the reality of today. The unions, of which my grandfather and son belong, have a purpose. And that is to protect the members. It is not to provide easy living by the heads of the Union, made possible by bribes to the current politicians.

I do not understand how people who should know better. Those in the media, whose job is to find the truth fail to see this reality. Perhaps, some will as the firings continue to come in their industry. Perhaps the only way they can survive is for them to become writers like Shulberg was.
Interesting adaptation. Perfect for an ensemble company looking for a unique script to explore. Just might sell tickets too! I'd love to see a staged production of it!
Great play
